NARRATOR: In the name of the Father and of the Son……
PEOPLE: Amen
NARRATOR: We will follow step by step the path to Calvary. This is a path that not only leads us to suffering, but help us through it, we arrive at the resurrection. It is the way Christ earned salvation for us. Without his resurrection the path to the father is meaningless.
PEOPLE: We ask your forgiveness Lord, because with our sins we have made your cross heavier and that of our brothers. Lord Jesus help us find the deeper meaning of your death so we can give meaning to our life and in it to our cross with its sufferings, sorrows, pains, and sacrifices.
JESUS IN THE GARDEN
NARRATOR: Jesus left as usual to the mount of olives; His disciples followed Him. (pause) arriving at the place He told them.
JESUS: Pray so you don’t fall into temptation.
NARRATOR: Then he walked away from them and kneeling he prayed with these words.
JESUS: Father, if you want, take this cup away from me, but not my will but yours be done.
NARRATOR: He was in agony and crying with anguish. His sweat turned into drops of Blood that fell to the ground.
NARRATOR: After praying he got up and went to where the disciples were but found them asleep and dejected with sadness told them.
JESUS: You sleep, get up and pray that you don't fall into temptation.
NARRATOR: Meanwhile, Judas negotiated with the Pharisees the capture of Jesus.
SOLDIER: Illustrious Master outside is a man looking for you named Judas, disciple of the false prophet who disturbs the peace in the city.
PHARISEE: Tell him to enter.
CAIAPHAS: Disciple of Jesus why have you come, speak.
JUDAS: My name is Judas; I have known they have met, and I wanted to come because the judges do not dare arrest Jesus. but I have come to tell you that if you pay well, I will give them Jesus.
PHARISEE: YOU? You must be crazy.
JUDAS: Yes, me your friend, show misses you, I hate Him as much as you do, I’m not crazy, I’m as sane as each of you, my offer is not a strange thing, I’m not the first to do something like this.
CAIAPHAS: What assurance do you offer?
JUDAS: I give you, my word!
PHARISEE: That's not enough. But how much do you want to give up your master.
JUDAS: 30 silver coins.
(They laugh and murmur amongst themselves)
JUDAS: Do you think is a lot? I have given you the price of a slave, and I will give you a prophet instead.
CAIAPHAS: Okay, the deal is done.
JUDAS: When will you give me the money?
PHARISEE: When you deliver us your master.
JUDAS: This very night, before the vigil.
PHARISEE: Well, then the money will be given to you.
JUDAS: Must be a good coin.
PHARISEE: Honor your deal with us and we will honor our deal with you, but woe to you if you betray us.
CAIAPHAS: How many men do you need to hand over your master and how will we know who he is?
JUDAS: Jesus will not resist. Just in case they had warned several soldiers
NARRATOR: Judas walks away to await the hour when he will carry out his plan. (Pause) when midnight arrives, he returns to meet with Caiaphas and explains to the soldiers how they will carry out the arrest.
JUDAS: This matter must be taken with reserve, otherwise it would be fatal.
PHARISEE: Where is your Master?
JUDAS: I know where he sleeps tonight, there you will catch him off guard.
CAIAPHAS: But the soldiers don't know him.
JUDAS: I know him and so there is no doubt I will go in front of the soldiers and whoever I kiss, that is Jesus.
CAIAPHAS: There is your reward. (Throws the coins)
NARRATOR: Jesus was still talking to his disciples, when suddenly one of the 12, Judas appeared accompanied by a group of soldiers with swords and clubs on behalf of the high priests. (Pause) Judas approaches Jesus and tells him:
JUDAS: Rabbi! (Judas kisses Him and the soldiers arrests Him)
JESUS: Judas, with a kiss you betray the son of man?
DISCIPLE: Master, should we draw the sword?
NARRATOR: One of them hurt one of the soldiers cutting off his ear but Jesus tells him.
JESUS: ENOUGH!
NARRATOR: And touching his ear healed him. Jesus turned to those who had come to arrest him and said:
JESUS: Perhaps they are looking for a thief and that is why they have come to seize me with swords and clubs, why did you not arrest me when I was with you in the temple? But now darkness reigns and it is your time.
NARRATOR: While they took Jesus to the house of the high priest, Peter was following, when he arrived, a soldier, seeing him there, stared at him and said.
SOLDIER 1: This one was with Him too.
PETER: Man, I don’t know Him.
SOLDIER 2. You are also one of them.
PETER: Man, I am not!
SOLDIER 3: It is true, this one was also with him, he is also Galilean.
PETER: Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.
NARRATOR: At that moment, while he was speaking the rooster crowed, and the Lord set his gaze on PETER and he remembered all his words, when he said to him; Before the rooster crows, you will have denied me 3 times. and going outside he began to cry.
FIRST STATION JESUS IS CONDEMNED TO DEATH
LECTOR: We adore you Christ and bless you.
PEOPLE: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world and me, a sinner. Amen.
LECTOR: They bring JESUS to the high priest, where the teachers of the law had gathered and the Jewish authorities, they considered him an enemy of the Priests, therefore they sought one false testimony against JESUS to condemn him to death.
But they could not find it despite the many false witnesses who appear.
A witness testifies.
HIGH PRIEST 1: We have heard it said that you can destroy the temple in three days, for you have said the following, "I AM GOING TO DESTROY THIS TEMPLE THAT MEN MADE AND IN THREE DAYS I WILL RAISE ANOTHER TEMPLE, NOT MADE BY MEN." In addition, isn't it you, who raises the dead?
HIGH PRIEST 2: You have nothing to respond? What is this they declare against you?
JESUS: I have spoken openly to everyone; I have always taught, and I have not spoken in hiding. Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me.
SOLDIER: Is this how you answer the high priest? (He slaps him)
JESUS: If I've spoken badly, prove in what, but if I've spoken well, why do you hit me?
LECTOR: At dawn... all the chief priests and the Jewish authorities carried out a
meeting to decide how to put JESUS to death... then they tied him up and took him to Pilate, the governor
PILATE: What accusation do you bring against this Man?
HIGH PRIEST 1: Mr. Pilate, Governor of Judea, we have seen that this man agitates the People, he is rioting and preaching throughout Judea. Starting with Galilee and
it's come this far. He says you do not have to pay taxes to Caesar, and He passes
Himself as Christ the King.
(Asks them to bring him closer)
PILATE: Are you the King of the Jews?
JESUS: Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me? My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my people would have fought for me not to be turned over to the Jews, but my kingdom is not of this world.
PILATE: Am I Jewish? Your people and the high priests turned you over to me. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?
LECTOR: Pilate then asked if the man was Galilean. (When he learned that Jesus was from the province charged to King Herod, he sent Jesus to him, since Herod was in Jerusalem in those days.)
LECTOR: Seeing JESUS, Herod was very happy, for he desired to meet him, he hoped that he would perform some miracle in his presence. That is why he asked him many questions but Jesus did not answer any. That same day, Herod and Pilate, the enemies, ended up becoming friends.
HEROD: I've been wanting to meet Jesus for a long time. For I have heard so much about Him, that I got curious and now is my chance (addressing Jesus) for a time I was afraid, I thought your reign would destabilize mine because multitudes followed you. Isn't it true that they wanted to put you as their King? Of course, as King I have everything I want, it's nice to have power and that's what you were looking for, right? What crime have you committed? Why does Pilate send you with me if we have been enemies? I want to see some of your miracles. Say a few of your magic words. Turned this water into wine, can't you?
(He sneers and throws the water in his face) Realize that your life is in my hands, if I return you to Pilate he will kill you, take this clown out of here. (Addressing the soldier) tell Pilate that I thank him for his gesture of friendship and that from now on I will consider myself his friend.
LECTOR: They bring Jesus back to Pilate, who, not wanting to condemn him spoke in these words to the People.
PILATE: You introduced this Man to me, accusing him of being an agitator. I questioned Him personally, in front of you, but I found no guilt in Him of any of the
crimes of which he is accused. Herod did not judge him guilty either, since he sent Him back to me. As you can see, in everything he did there is no crime that deserves death, so, after punishing him, I will set him free.
(Commands Jesus to be scourged)
PILATE: I have already punished Him, now take Him, and judge Him according to your law.
PHARISEE: It is not lawful for us to convict a criminal; the order must come from higher.
LECTOR: On the occasion of Easter. The governor had a habit of releasing a condemned, at the choice of the people. (Pilate knew Jesus had been handed over out of envy) the People then had a famous detainee named Barabbas; he had been imprisoned for murder in a riot in Jerusalem. Pilate wanting to release Jesus: (Orders Barabbas be brought forward)
PILATE: Who do you want me to release? This criminal and murderer named Barabbas or Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews?
PEOPLE: Not that one…not that one…Barabbas. Release Barabbas.
PILATE: What am I to do with the King of the Jews?
PEOPLE: Crucify Him… crucify Him…
PILATE: (Asks for water to be brought to him and washes his hands) then do with him what you want, but I am not guilty of the blood that this Man sheds.
LECTOR: The Roman Soldiers took Jesus to the courtyard of the palace and gathered the whole troop around him... They took off his garments and put on a purple cloak on Him. Then they placed on his head a crown that they had braided with thorns... and in His right hand a reed... And bending the knee before Jesus said:
SOLDIERS: Long live the King of the Jews!
SECOND STATION JESUS CARRIES THE CROSS
LECTOR: We adore you Christ and bless you.
PEOPLE: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world and me, a sinner. Amen!
LECTOR: When they finished making fun of Him, they took off His cloak and put his clothes back on and took him to be crucified. He himself carried his cross and went out to a place called the skull which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.
HIGH PRIEST: You yourself must carry the cross, where you will die as per our custom.
LECTOR: Jesus had warned us that whoever wanted to follow Him had to leave everything and take up his/her cross. Jesus takes his wooden cross which is a symbol of the heavier cross: The responsibility to take away, to wrest sin from the world. We must hold on to the cross of Jesus when we give ourselves to service of the People and then come the problems, works, and suffering.
PEOPLE: Lord you received the wood with love where my sins and miseries go, the ones I committed and did not pay because you paid them, they were on your shoulders. that's why I was your executioner and not your disciple. Now I want to learn from you and follow after you with my cross, the one I made and you endured, I promise to do penance to pay my debts and return love.
CHOIR: Forgive your People, Lord.
THIRD STATION JESUS FALLS FOR THE FIRST TIME
LECTOR: We adore you Christ and Bless you.
PEOPLE: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world and me, a sinner. Amen!
LECTOR: Jesus can no longer resist, the forces betray him, he hesitates and falls.
NARRATOR: He has fallen due to fatigue, he had wanted to fully accept the human condition, he was God and he had also wanted to become a man to know the fatigue, the weakness of the body. I accept that he was God and that he humbled himself for us, He accepted being made fun of for love of you and me, and that is why he falls so that you can get up.
PEOPLE: He fell because my burden weighed on him. He fell so that I would not be
discouraged in my falls, if you see my life, if I fall, I must remember that my cross
weighed on Him and he fell.
CHOIR: Forgive your People, Lord.
FOURTH STATION JESUS ENCOUNTERS HIS MOTHER
LECTOR: We adore you Christ and Bless you.
PEOPLE: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world and me, a sinner. Amen!
LECTOR: On the path of pain and total surrender of his life, Jesus encounters his mother who follows him to the foot of the cross. In Mary's tears, in the tenderness
of her gazes, in the unmeasured love of her maternal heart, Jesus finds relief from
His pains.
MARY: I remember Old Simeon who blessed us and said to me: look woman, this child is set for all in Israel to fall or rise; it will be a disputed sign, while to you, a sword will pierce your heart and the thoughts of men will be brought to light.
PEOPLE: Father, just as Mary goes out to meet Jesus on the way to Calvary, accompanies Him at all times of His mission, may we go out to meet our brothers and sisters living their calvary, may we help ourselves to fulfill our mission to give
us life and reach out uninterestingly.
CHOIR: Forgive your People, Lord.
FIFTH STATION SIMON THE CYRINEUS HELPS JESUS CARRY THE CROSS
LECTOR: We adore you Christ and Bless you.
PEOPLE: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world and me, a sinner. Amen!
SOLDIER 1: Hey you, how much do you want to help Jesus of Nazareth carry the cross?
THE CYRINEUS: I don't want anything, what interests me is to get home and rest, there my family awaits.
SOLDIER 2: You must accept. Don't you realize He needs help getting to Calvary?
He is very tired, help him!
PEOPLE: Father, we want to be like that humble man of the countryside, Simon of Cyrene who helped Jesus with his cross... when we help those who need us, we help you carry your cross... Help us love and fight against every injustice that makes others suffer.
CHOIR: Sorry "oh" my God...
SIXTH STATION VERONICA CLEANSES THE FACE OF JESUS
LECTOR: We adore you Christ and Bless you.
PEOPLE: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world and me, a sinner. Amen!
LECTOR: Jesus' face is full of blood, dust, saliva, and sweat. It moves the heart of a woman, who with a piece of cloth cleans it.
VERÓNICA: Too much injustice they have committed against you. It is that they do not realize who You are, the awaited Messiah, the Son of God who comes to deliver our people, it's the only thing I can do right now, cleanse your disfigured face.
LECTOR: How is the face now, the face of our people? The poor often have blood, dirt, grime, pain, hunger, disease, and discouragement. Who is going to clean their faces? It is in our hands to be moved, like this woman, and clothe our people with the face of Jesus Christ.
PEOPLE: Father, help us make our way through the many obstacles to reach you and, our brothers, cleanse your face and that of our people and clothe them with the image of Jesus Christ, your Son.
CHOIR: Sorry "oh" my God...
SEVENTH STATION JESUS FALLS FOR THE SECOND TIME
LECTOR: We adore you Christ and Bless you.
PEOPLE: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world and me, a sinner. Amen!
LECTOR: Jesus falls because the road is long, and the cross is heavy. Also, the people that fight for his freedom, for brotherhood falls many times, gets tired, discouraged by not seeing results to their efforts. But the important thing is to get back up. Ask for help and give it, to continue with encouragement on the way.
PEOPLE: Father, many times we feel the loneliness and sadness of your Son. Sometimes things they do not go as we would like. There are problems in the family, and at work. It is difficult to carry our Cross, help us to overcome any obstacle that does not allows us to rise with encouragement and hope.
CHOIR: Sorry "oh" my God...
EIGHTH STATION JESUS SPEAKS TO THE WOMEN OF JERUSALEM
LECTOR: We adore you Christ and Bless you.
PEOPLE: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world and me, a sinner. Amen!
LECTOR: He was followed by many people and women who cried and mourned for him.
WOMEN: (Crying they approach Jesus, try to touch Him and question why He allows this be done to Him).
JESUS: Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. Weep for yourselves and your children. For there will come a day when you say: blessed are those who do not have children! If with the good wood they do this. With the dry one, what will they do?
LECTOR: Jesus should not move us to compassion, He died freely, knowing that He was innocent. The real evil that must be mourned is the sin that enslaves us, the modern man, proud of his science, admired for his exploits, satisfied for his well-being he is the true one worthy of hurt. Let us now weep in silence for this modern society that beautifies itself after money, sex, and ambition, causing worship of those idols. Let's cry our dry tree, selfishness that ignites the fire of corruption.
PEOPLE: Lord, who comforts the women who wept for You and You who wept for your people, unfaithful to the divine call. Help us discover our true social wounds and let us heal them as the fruit of your salvation.
CHOIR: Sorry "oh" my God...
NINTH STATION JESUS FALLS FOR THE THIRD TIME
LECTOR: We adore you Christ and Bless you.
PEOPLE: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world and me, a sinner. Amen!
(Jesus falls)
LECTOR: Christ, despite his divine condition, did not flaunt his godhood. On the contrary, He stripped himself of his rank and took the status of slave. Passing as one of many. And so, acting like any other man, he lowered himself, even submit to death and death on the cross. That is why God raised him up above all, and granted him the name above every name; so that to the name of Jesus every knee bows in heaven, on earth, in the abyss and every tongue proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord, for the glory of God the Father.
PEOPLE: Lord you who said: he who does not carry his cross and does not come after Me, can't be My disciple. Pray to the Father to give us the strength of the spirit so that we are not ashamed to be your disciples.
(The soldiers beat, and yell at Him)
SOLDIERS: Get up you must keep going it's late and we don't have all day.
CYRINEUS: Stop it! Stop it! Stop hitting Him, He won't be able to get up if they keep hitting him. If they don't stop beating Him, I won't carry the cross anymore I won't help Him anymore.
CHOIR: Sorry "oh" my God...
TENTH STATION JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS GARMENTS
LECTOR: We adore you Christ and Bless you.
PEOPLE: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world and me, a sinner. Amen!
LECTOR: When they arrived at the place of the crucifixion the soldiers divided his clothes, one for each soldier.
SOLDIER 1: Look, here's what this condemned man wore! What do we do with them?
SOLDIER 2: Let us distribute them amongst us.
(The soldier begins to distribute the sandals, the mantle but when he reaches the tunic...)
SOLDIER 1: And what do we do with his tunic?
SOLDIER 2: I have an idea, why don't we cast lots for it? To see who gets it.
SOLDIER 3: It is not a bad idea, but how?
SOLDADO 4: Let’s flip a coin.
(They take out a coin and draw it)
LECTOR: The soldiers began to play for Jesus’ tunic. And so, the prophecy that says:
they divided my clothes and raffled off my tunic is fulfilled. Christ is also the image of all those who are stripped, stripped of their honor, their dignity as a person, their
work or any other circumstance. He is a sign of the marginalized, of those who in the society do not count, of the dispossessed of powerful countries and have no one to care for them.
PEOPLE: Lord, may I learn to comfort the sad. And clothe so much nudity. Jesus: being a Christian, truthfully, may my life always be a bond of union and love between brothers. May I always unite and never divide or separate.
CHOIR: Sorry "oh" my God...
ELEVENTH STATION JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS
LECTOR: We adore you Christ and Bless you
PEOPLE: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world and me, a sinner. Amen!
(Note: the station is announced, the crucifixion is performed while the NARRATOR says)
NARRATOR: As he was being crucified, people were there watching... (Wait for the cross to go up and then say) The chief priests, chiefs of the Jews and the teachers of the law mocked Him by saying.
PHARISEE 1: Hey you, who destroys the temple and raise it up in 3 days, if you are the son of God deliver yourself from this ordeal and get down from the cross.
PHARISEE 2: You have saved others! And he is not able to save himself.
PHARISEE 3: May the King of Israel come down from the cross and we will believe in him.
SOLDIER: He has put his trust in God, if God loves him as he says, may he save him... for He himself said: "I am the Son of God”.
NARRATOR: The greater the blasphemies and insults, at the height of the cross was heard the voice of Jesus, who gazed on heaven and forgetting His torments, said with infinite tenderness:
JESUS: “Father, forgive them because they don't know what they're doing”
NARRATOR: The soldiers wrote an inscription on the cross in which it was stated the reason for his conviction.
Note: A soldier goes up and places the sign on the cross and then says:
SOLDIER: "This is Jesus... the king of the Jews.
(All soldiers mock Jesus)
NARRATOR: Also, one of the criminals insulted him saying:
GESTAS: Did you not say you was the son of God? Then save yourself and save us too.
DIMAS: Have you no fear of God? You who are in the same ordeal? We do deserve
this condemnation and we pay for what we have done, but this man has done nothing bad. Jesus... Jesus, remember me when you enter your kingdom.
(Looking at Jesus and slowly).
JESUS: Truly... truly I say to you: that today you will be with me in paradise.
NARRATOR: The pious mother stood by the cross and wept, while the son hung from the Cross; pierced and sorrowful seeing her son the one she loved the most.
Note: Mary and John approach at the foot of the cross, and Mary says:
MARY: My son... flesh of my flesh... heart of my heart... (Slowly)
JESUS: “Woman behold your son... Son behold your mother”
NARRATOR: From that moment the disciple took her home. Jesus feels like no one else has never felt, committed to his father and to his brothers and sisters, men, who need redemption. This is why he was crucified. He was able to redeem us another way. By freeing us through the cross, he knew that, for man, the Christian commitment would mean, many times, being crucified.
PEOPLE: Lord purify our faith, so that in proclaiming Himself our King and Lord, may we understand that at your invitation, we are not to be served but serve.
CHOIR: Sorry "oh" my God...
TWELFTH STATION JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS
LECTOR: We adore you Christ and Bless you.
PEOPLE: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world and me, a sinner. Amen!
LECTOR: Jesus spends three long hours of torture and agony nailed to the cross. Most of his followers have abandoned him. His enemies mock Him. Jesus suffers, but he does not cease to fulfill his mission of being the presence of God and tells us his last works.
JESUS: My god. My God, why have you forsaken me?
LECTOR: So, the scriptures can be fulfilled, he said:
JESUS: I thirst.
LECTOR: Immediately one of them ran to take a sponge, soaked it with vinegar and attaching it to a cane offered the drink to Jesus. Jesus tasted it and said:
JESUS: Everything is fulfilled.
LECTOR: With a loud voice exclaimed.
JESUS: Father, in your hands I commend my spirit.
LECTOR: Jesus bowing his head, gave up his spirit.
(Everyone kneels and contemplate in silence)
The sun went dark and the whole region was left in darkness until mid-afternoon,
then the veil that closed the sanctuary in the temple was torn in two from top to
bottom.
PEOPLE: Father, we believe Jesus crucified is your faithful Son who fulfilled the mission entrusted him, and even though Jesus has died his followers we will not abandon Him, we ask youto be a faithful people, sharing the sufferings of Jesus, may we fix our trust in you.
CHOIR: Sorry "oh" my God...
THIRTHEENTH STATION JESUS IS LOWERED FROM THE CROSS
LECTOR: We adore you Christ and Bless you.
PEOPLE: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world and me, a sinner. Amen!
LECTOR: They asked Pilate to break the legs of those who were crucified, to remove
them before the Sabbath, when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already
dead. Still, a soldier opened His side with a spear and instantly blood and water
gushed out.
SOLDIER: This was a righteous man; he really was innocent. Truly this is the son of God.
(The soldier kneels)
LECTOR: They went to ask permission to lower the body of Jesus and gave it to Mary His Mother.
PEOPLE: Father, help us convince ourselves that man and woman are the most valuable in your creation, that respect for the human person is the first requirement in the Gospel. That life is holy when they give themselves every day to the service of others, those who need us.
CHOIR: Sorry "oh" my God...
FOURTEENTH STATION JESUS IS PLACED IN THE TOMB
LECTOR: We adore you Christ and Bless you.
PEOPLE: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world and me, a sinner. Amen!
LECTOR: They wrapped the body of Jesus with cloths scented with the mixture of aromas, according to the Jews burial custom. (pause) He was placed in an excavated
tomb on the rock where they hadn't put anyone yet and rolled a large stone against
the entrance of the tomb.
PEOPLE: Father, Christ was buried, and we are still being buried, when we live in deception, misery, ignorance, apathy, vice, and injustice. Give us your strength so that we begin to follow Jesus, to lay down our lives for Him and others.
LECTOR: To believe in the resurrection and to live it is to denounce those guilty of death, the exploitation, and injustice so many of our brothers and sisters live; is to break our silence and leave our passivity, is to begin to act in protest of those who make them suffer, it is to turn away from sin and have the confidence that we will achieve it if we can overcome obstacles and organize ourselves: to report the lie wherever it comes from; is to proclaim the truth and help our brothers and sisters,
understand the real causes of their sufferings, of their desperate situation, and of their poverty.
PEOPLE: Father, send us your spirit so that we may understand how to make our resurrection with daily work, brotherly love, struggle, union, commitment, at the side of those who suffer and hope for a better world; those who live in slavery and want to be free. Those who die like animals and want to live as your children, next to the poor of the oppressed that they begin to fight.
We ask this for Christ our Lord.
Amen.
